Take the Leap into the Unexplored!

Located at the very heart of the Stags Leap District, Stags' Leap Winery continues a proud winemaking heritage that began with the first vintage in 1893. Today, Stags' Leap Winery continues to produce exquisite wines that are routinely rated 90 points and above in the prestigious appellation that bears the winery name. Legend has it, when pursued by a hunter, a stag leapt into the unknown rather than submit. Like that noble animal, Stags’ Leap Winery has always been driven by their indomitable spirit. Now, you are invited to take the leap and discover the unexplored, just like the legendary namesake.

The Vineyards
145 Years of Napa Valley Grape Growing

Stags' Leap Estate Vineyard

On one of California’s earliest wine estates, a unique terroir and ideal microclimate support a classical standard of viticulture, land use, and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was over a century ago. An intimate valley within the greater Napa Valley, Stags’ Leap is a 240-acre estate, of which 85-acres are planted with grape vines.

The Terroir

The rock outcropping that forms the eastern boundary of the estate, the Stags Leap Palisades, sheds debris in the form of volcanic rhyolite and tuff, which is carried to the valley floor where it mingles with the deeper subsoil made up of Bale loam formed from ancient river sediment. Topographically, the slope of the palisades and its small valley are oriented to block early morning sun, retain afternoon heat, and funnel cooler marine air coming from the San Pablo Bay to the south.

The Aspect

The sheer volume of rock has a direct impact on the local climate of the estate. The rock face of the palisades gives off stored warmth after sunset, radiating down over the entire ranch. It’s wonderful to feel that lingering, radiating heat. You can bet it feels good to a Cabernet cluster as well. The high incidence of rock in the soil holds the heat of the sun into the early twilight hours and then loses it rapidly, effectively slowing and prolonging the ripening process.

Tasting Experience Option 1

2019 Stags' Leap Napa Valley Chardonnay

This Chardonnay is a story of balance, a delicious intersection of richness and minerality that benefits from the classical standard of viticulture, care of the land, and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was in 1893 when Stags' Leap Winery celebrated its first vintage.

Tasting Note

The boisterous bouquet invites you in with lively aromas of delicate Meyer lemon, orange blossom, fresh white peach and delicate honeysuckle, supported by more subtle notes of Tarte Tatin and brioche toast (a nod to the well-integrated French Oak). Fresh, vibrant and mouthwatering, the palate is crisp with layers of ripe Golden Delicious apple, guava and warm Asian pear, backed up by a luscious texture that is rich and balanced (hinting at the delicate batonnage lees stirring that occurs during the winemaking process). Well-integrated notes of vanilla, allspice and crème brûlée lead to a lengthy finish that is full and bright. Maintaining a core of fresh acidity, this Chardonnay is graceful and elegant, full of depth and complexity.

2017 Stags' Leap Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with Napa Valley and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of estate fruit and grapes from select Napa Valley growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor.

Tasting Note
The 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is expressive and inviting, with a bouquet of wild blackberry and fresh black currant fruit alongside delicate floral notes of geranium and violet, with warmer notes of caramel, sweet cinnamon, cardamom and black pepper spice coming through from the oak integration. On the palate, the berry fruit profile continues with juicy blackberry, cassis and strawberry, but there are also hints of sweet tobacco, brown spice and bittersweet chocolate, giving this Cabernet a rich charm and fullness. Seamlessly integrated oak and cocoa-powdery tannins provide a plush mouthfeel and add layers of complexity, all wrapping up with a lengthy textured finish. Incredibly approachable and pleasing upon release, this wine is sure to impress and pair well alongside many culinary treats.
