Hills Family Estate

In 1981, Doug and Darci Hill settled down on an acre of land at the northern edge of Yountville. Their children, Ryan and Carly, grew up playing in the vineyards, tending chickens, and played baseball and basketball. They also helped their neighbors grow organic fruits and vegetables for the local restaurants including Thomas Keller’s world renowned French Laundry restaurant. For decades, the Hill Family vineyards produced high quality grapes for Napa wineries.

Hill Family Estate produced their first wines in 2001, a Merlot and a red blend called Origin. Production ranges between 9,000 to 12,000 cases annually. Having a repertoire of 12 different vineyards to draw from they are able to select only the highest quality fruit for their wines.

Your Wine Enthusiast

Janelle is the Wine Club Coordinator at Hill Family Estate. Though born in Washington state, she spent most of her growing up years in Southern California where she landed her first job in the wine industry in Temecula California. This is where her love of wine blossomed, and after 7 years working for an Italian family winery, she decided her next step was moving north to the beautiful Napa Valley. Prior to Hill Family Estate Janelle worked for Joseph Cellars, and Davis Estates with a focus on customer service, tasting room management, wine club, wine education, and harvest work. Janelle lives in Sonoma with her partner and two cats (aka: “furry children”). She is currently enrolled in Santa Rosa College to receive her Enology degree (wine science), is Level 2 WSET certified, and on track to pass her level 3 WSET exam later this year. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, exploring various wine regions, and traveling.

2018 Tiara Sauvignon Blanc

We pushed hard this year to try new techniques, barrels, and yeasts, to see if we could maximize the potential of our Sauvignon Blanc. Windy Flats has three different clones of Sauvignon Blanc that Doug Hill has selected to fit the unusual site nestled in a cliff on the western side of Wooden Valley. This year we kept them separate and harvested at a broad range of degrees Brix, and tried whole cluster pressing and skin maceration on many lots. We separated dirty juice from free run and from press lots and put all of them to barrel as separate lots. We had a wonderful Semillon this year, so we have 15% of it in this blend. Almost all the lots turned out very well, so the final Tiara blend is the result of how the wines fit together. The nose is big and fruity, and the palate is clean, elegant, and complex. Winemaker Alison Doran’s tasting notes: The 2018 Tiara has beautiful aromas consisting of honeydew melon and ripe pineapple. The palate has a broad reach with lively acidity and pineapple and lime leaf flavors that persist all the way to the finish. This Sauvignon Blanc will grow over the next few years to give the complexity and polish that cool climate viticulture is known for.

2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is carefully blended to give power and balance. We appreciate the opportunity to use high elevations (Baker Vineyard in Atlas Peak is at 1,200 ft.) with their intense tannins and color, then blend and civilize them with vineyards from the valley floor and cooler areas. Windy Flats is on the western foothills in Wooden Valley, and Beau Terroir is in the Carneros foothills. Beau Terre, Hansen, and Villagio are on the valley floor. The Malbec and Merlot elevate the nose and display the fruit and oak spice, and Syrah adds density without astringency.

The 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of black currant, black cherry, violets, vanilla and pie spice. The palate is rich, with flavors of blackberry, hazelnut, raspberry and mocha. This wine has tremendous viscosity for being so young and has a lot of room to grow and integrate all the flavors.
