Grgich Hills Estate is deeply rooted in family. The winery was founded by two families, Grgich and Hills,  joined together in the pursuit of creating the best wines in the world. Today, Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich, is President and Ivo Jeramaz, Mike’s nephew, is Winemaker/VP of Vineyards & Production.  Now they welcome a third generation to the winery!

Vintners Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first earned world-wide recognition when the Chardonnay he crafted won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France. This tasting helped shatter the myth that only French soil could produce the world’s greatest wines and drawing international attention to Napa Valley wines. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills to open their family-owned-and-operated winery in 1977.

The Vineyards

Calistoga

With cloudless days and cool nighttime temperatures, this 34-acre Calistoga vineyard is perfect for growing sun-loving Zinfandel, 2.9 acres of which was planted more than 100 years ago. Miljenko’s Old Vine Zinfandel is the showcase for these wines.

Soil: Reddish, gravelly, loam that has excellent drainage

American Canyon

This is the largest of the five vineyards. With slightly cooler temperatures than Carneros and stronger winds that reduce the vines’ vigor, they are able to receive higher quality, concentrated fruit.

Soil: Primarily sandy loam, some clay loam topsoil over slate subsoil. Merlot planted to clay.

Rutherford

The Rutherford appellation boasts a warm, well-suited climate for growing full-bodied, extracted Cabernet. In 2000, 17.3 acres of Cabernet was planted in their vineyard surrounding the winery. They also have one acre of Petit Verdot which we blend into Cabernet.

Soil: Gravelly clay loam which is part of the Rutherford alluvial fan

Carneros

Summer fog and constant cooling wines make it arguably one of the finest regions to grow Chardonnay. These prized vines produce the legendary Chardonnay and the best blocks are reserved for our Paris Tasting “Commemorative” Chardonnayand Miljenko’s Selection Chardonnay.

Soil: Clay, loam

Yountville

Located on the valley floor, our 63-acre Yountville vineyard grows classic Bordeaux varietals. This vineyard is home to a 25-acre plot which are the second oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and were planted in 1959. These vines are showcased in the Yountville Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon.

Soil: Clay loam and loam topsoil, pebbly subsoil that encourages the vine’s roots to dig deep for nutrients and water

Tasting Experience Option 1

2018 Napa Valley Essence, Sauvignon Blanc - 750ml

The wine opens with notes of fresh lime, star fruit, stinging nettle, capsicum, and black pepper on the nose. On the palate, lime and recurring fresh tropical aromatics are present. Wet stone minerality complements the complex mid-palate, and mouth-watering acidity carries the wine into a long finish.

Tasting Note

Only the best blocks that express the true nature—the essence—of Sauvignon Blanc are used for this limited-production wine.

2018 Napa Valley Chardonnay - 750ml

This gorgeous Chardonnay opens with fresh, citrus aromas of Meyer lemon and lime followed by juicy, ripe peach, with underlying notes of honeysuckle, herbs and vanilla. The 2018 vintage showed above average natural acids in the wines, which, along with lower sugar levels, make the 2018 vintage white wines exceptionally fresh and vibrant. Take a sip, and you’ll find that this 2018 Chardonnay, Napa Valley exhibits extraordinary balance of citrus fruit on the front palate with minerality and depth of flavors on the mid-palate. The aftertaste is harmonious and lingers well beyond expectation.

Tasting Note

Classically-styled wine that is alive with delicious, food friendly acidity. Fermented and aged 10 months in French oak.

2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - 750ml

This luscious Cabernet exhibits inviting aromas of dark red fruit, blood orange and fresh plum on the nose, with undertones of rose petals, cinnamon bun, and gingerbread. Flavors of dark fruit, black olives and blackberries, are followed by hints of moss and savory dried herbs. This age-worthy Cabernet has great density and length, and is complex yet nimble on the back palate with a long, balanced aftertaste.

A luscious Bordeaux blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dash of Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
